Shoot Out at Fourways Mall

A shootout occurred at Fourways Mall on Thursday 12th April 2007 at approximately 11h00. No patron nor tenant was injured.

Five armed men entered a jewellery store and fired several shots to open the jewel cabinets, stealing an undisclosed amount of jewels. Two uniformed police officers who were busy with normal policing within Fourways Mall, were in close proximity to the shooting that took place inside the jewellery store and immediately tried to apprehend the armed robbers, together with Fourways Mall security staff. Says SAPS spokesperson Eugene Opperman “The officers, armed with just handguns, opened fire on the suspects. One of the suspects was shot in the chest”.

No other person was hurt during the incident. Police immediately deployed several roadblocks throughout the greater Sandton area as well as an SAPS helicopter in an attempt to arrest the suspects. No arrests have been made so far, however a few suspects are being questioned.

Says Samantha Meddows-Taylor, Marketing Manager of Fourways Mall “Trauma counsellors were contacted immediately and assisted patrons and tenants who required their services on the premises.”
